[below is the first post, answering many of the questions about our new daughter.  To see current posts, head over to www.pavicich.net]

Hello all!

With so many wonderful people in our lives, it finally made sense to post a few updates that anyone who can
spell "pavicich" could find quickly and easily.

Our wonderful, beautiful, and healthy daughter Persephone Eva Minck Pavicich was welcomed to Planet Earth last night at 9:51 PM.  After a long and hard labor (almost 24 hours) the doctor and labor nurse recommend that a cesarean was in order, as Persephone was stuck somewhere high in the birth canal.  There is no doubt that I have a renewed and redoubled respect for the strength of my wife.  She put in nearly a full 24 hours of natural labor (not even a Tylenol) before it was clear that we were entering into dangerous territory.  There is nothing I have ever seen quite like the strength and focus Jessica
brought to the whole experience.  I am forever grateful that she did this for us and our daughter.

There are a few questions we are already receiving with some frequency, so I thought I'd address those below, followed by a slideshow at the bottom.

Enjoy!

Baby's First FAQ!

How are you Guys?  How is Jessica?
Jessica is tired, and very, very happy.  They are keeping her and the baby here for monitoring until at least Monday.

Wait...What?  Persa...Percy...Stephe...what is her name?

Persephone.  Pronounced like this.  Persephone is a complicated character in Greek Mythology.  She is often considered the goddess of the harvest, representative of innocence and beauty, who grows into the role of goddess of the underworld.  We encourage you to read many of the great versions of her story out there, a simple version of which can be found here.  While she is a complex character, this passage probably sums up what we admire in the name:

"The Greek goddess Persephone represents both the youthful, innocent, and joyous maiden aspect of a woman as well as the more womanly self who, innocence lost and family attachments loosened, can begin to consciously decide for herself.

In Greek mythology Persephone, goddess of the soul, is the possessor of its dark and frightening wisdom. But the goddess Persephone is also the harbinger of spring . . . and a reminder of all the growth and hope that it brings." 1

Why the name Eva?

Eva Peretsky was my maternal grandmother who passed away less than six months ago.  If I listen hard I can hear her crying right now telling us how much she loves us and how beautiful our baby is...

Are there any Nicknames you guys are considering?

While nicknames are tricky things that you often can't control, we will not be surprised if people choose to call her Sephy.

Are you taking visitors?

Yes.  Please give me a call if you'd like to come meet our daughter.
